Design Themes - Cool Mini Gardens

Bulb containers are among the first to be used outside. Most bulbs are frost tolerant when blooming. Under cool conditions, the flowers often deepen in color and last even longer. Containers with these true Cool Beauties give an early sense of spring, a touch of color and fragrance suited for many settings.

Larger containers, upto 40 inches in diameter, are just perfect for about any urban setting. In Keukenhof, the award winning container shown at the left, was planted with three small shrubs (Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’) in the middle. In a concentric triangle around the shrubs, about 20, 4 inch pots each with 3 pre-forced tulips (‘Christmas Dream’) are planted. Small flowering pansies like the Viburnum, serve as the permanent planting while the tulips can be replaced once or twice during the season. This combination can easily withstand poor weather conditions and continued blooming well into May.

What else spells the arrival of Spring better then sweet scented Hyacinths. Their unique fragrance and crisp colors make them well suited to be used in outdoor containers, f.e. in large tall modeled pots placed near doorways. Here hyacinth ‘Ibis’ is inter planted in large containers with matching Bellis perennis and Myosotis to give an extra sparkling effect.

Compose and rearrange pots just as you like them best. Choose from the wide tapestry of colors and fragrances that will add a new dimension to any urban landscape. Make spring come early.
