Feel the art...

Design Themes - Feel the Art

Long-lasting color schemes can be created by the careful selection and combination of bulb varieties. During the world exhibition Floriade, the theme “Feel the Art of Nature”, was spelled in letters each made with three tulip cultivars that flowered in succession. This design, supported by Hyacinths and Muscari, did work all spring.

At Longwood Gardens PA the extended performance of the borders along the brick walk is achieved by a close spacing of 2 tulip varieties with different bloom time in each section. Use tulips from the same color range, or design even more vivid, color evolving borders this way.

In a similar fashion, the coordination of bloom-time is critical to sequence spring maintenance activities. Areas planted with Early, Mid or Late blooming varieties, do not all have to be exchanged at once.

The color impact of flower bulbs is even more stunning in combination with annuals, perennials, roses or other flowering shrubs and trees. Plant pearly pink tulips as; Rosalie, Mariette or Pink Diamond, below Japanese cherries. Such a spectacular show works. It attracts many tourist to the Nation’s Capitol each year.

Here is a list of the prettiest and best performing tulips, for each color ranging from early to late spring flowering.
